Art meets Physics

Quantum physics turns our previous understanding of natural laws upside down, opening up new perspectives on the world and our relationship to it. In this rotating exhibition, artists delve deeply into themes from quantum physics, offering poetic, metaphorical, and visual interpretations of this fascinating science.

The aim of the exhibition is to bring complex and often difficult-to-understand concepts of quantum physics closer to the audience in an aesthetically appealing and emotionally accessible way. Principles such as chaos and order, entanglement (mysterious connections between spatially separated systems), duality, superposition, emergent patterns (complex structures arising from individual units), and invisible connections and interactions form the thematic foundation for the artworks.

Through the use of metaphorical images and poetic forms, the artists succeed in conveying these scientific concepts on an emotional and intuitive level. Each artist is given a 2m x 2m wall space and a total of 25 frames to create individual pieces. These individual works combine to form a cohesive artwork, inviting visitors to deeply immerse themselves in the artistic exploration of quantum physics. In this way, science becomes tangible through the eyes of art, and its mysteries become accessible on a deeper, emotional level.

4m² is a cooparation between the ML4Q Cluster of Excellence and the Alanus Hochschule für Kunst und Gesellschaft. The rotating exhibition was conceived by Andrea Sunder-Plassmann, Professor of Video, Photography, and New Media at Alanus University, in collaboration with her students. Andrea Sunder-Plassmann works with photography, film/video, and installations. Her works are autobiographical and philosophical in nature, exploring themes such as time and light as sculptural elements. In doing so, she questions the boundaries between material reality and the materialization of the ephemeral. Her internationally exhibited works create an intense dialogue between sensory experience and digital aesthetics, actively drawing the audience into the artwork.

The Artworks

4m2: Through the use of metaphorical images and poetic forms, the artists succeed in conveying scientific concepts on an emotional and intuitive level. Each artist is given a 2m x 2m wall space and a total of 25 frames to design individually. These individual pieces come together to form a unified artwork, inviting visitors to immerse themselves deeply in the artistic exploration of quantum physics. In this way, science becomes tangible through the eyes of art, and its mysteries become accessible on a deeper, emotional level.

Blue Box in Superposition: The inspiration for this digital collage is the fascinating principle of superposition from quantum physics. However, I didn’t want to simply depict this with Schrödinger’s cat casually sunbathing; instead, I aimed to construct a layered world. Beneath the surface of a surface lies a life surrounded by infinitely many variations of itself. We drift through the spacetime ocean in our boxes with seemingly fixed frames of reference. One should not attempt to measure a box, and definitely should not open the box under the TV, or as Hamlet said, “I could be bounded in a nutshell, and count myself a king of infinite space.”

Die Unscharfe Galerie (or The Uncertainty Galery): The work is a layered interplay of art and science that seeks to blur the boundaries between rational thought and emotionality. It consists of 25 individual pieces that interact with one another, creating a continuous dynamic intended to take the viewer on a journey of reflection.
Physical phenomena, such as Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle and quantum entanglement, are connected with emotional themes like love and rejection in interpersonal relationships. The rational concepts of physics are juxtaposed with the unpredictable aspects of human experiences, without drawing clear dividing lines between these realms.
A central concept in quantum physics is observation, which alters the state of a system. This idea translates to interpersonal relationships: the mere act of perceiving within a relationship already changes its course. The individual pieces evolve through this interaction, generating a constant transformation meant to illustrate the unpredictability of both physical and emotional processes.
