Beyond Binary: Christine Falter on building quantum computers
Christine Falter, PhD candidate at Forschungszentrum Jülich, used a simple sphere to explain a complex idea: quantum computers don’t just flip between 0 and 1 – they explore everything in between. In the lab, there’s no lab coat; to build the delicate nanodevices these machines require she works in full cleanroom gear, more like an astronaut than a scientist, in conditions borrowed from today’s microchip technology.
From Drops to Dynamics: What Chaos Teaches Us About Balance
Elisa Vallini, PhD candidate at the University of Cologne, turned chaos into clarity at this year’s Soapbox Science. Using the butterfly effect and a drop of ink as starting points, she guided the audience through the surprising connection between chaos and thermalization, in both the classical and quantum worlds. Her talk showed the public how even the most unpredictable systems can follow the rules of physics.
