New Artwork in the Exhibition 4m² – Art Meets Physics: “Labor Humor” by Sophia von Schaewen
On December 13th, the latest piece in the rotating exhibition 4m² – Art Meets Physics was unveiled in the foyer of the Institute of Applied Physics (IAP) at the University of Bonn: “Labor Humor” by Sophia von Schaewen.
This experimental artwork playfully invites viewers to look at quantum physics from a fresh and creative angle. In 25 images (each 40 x 40 cm) and 10 different themes, surprising connections between artistic expression and physical concepts are explored. The interactive elements were discovered on site at the IAP, photographed, and poetically reinterpreted.
“Labor Humor” shows that science is not only about numbers and formulas—it’s also filled with emotion, curiosity, creativity, and humor. With lightness and wit, the work approaches complex topics like superposition or quantum entanglement, making them accessible through visual and poetic means.
The project is part of a collaboration between the ML4Q Cluster of Excellence and the Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences. As part of 4m² – Art Meets Physics, students from Alanus are each given a 2×2 meter wall space to design freely. The result: deeply personal interpretations of physical phenomena—and new bridges between two seemingly distant disciplines.
