We started with a presentation on quantum computers, how they are built…

… and what superposition is about!

With over 40 families…

… curious to watch and try out some amazing physical phenomena…

… like crushing flowers with liquid nitrogen!

Once each year, many organisations and institutes get the chance to open their doors on the Türen auf mit der Maus event. On October 3, children and their families experienced physics up close at the Institute of Physics under the motto “Exciting Connections“.

The day started with a curious and joyful group learning about the history of quantum physics and its implementation in quantum computers. After the presentation, they were divided into groups to participate in amusing and engaging physics demonstrations such as smashing flowers and other objects with liquid nitrogen to show the principles of cryogenics. They also had the chance to build their own microscope and learn about quantum and physical phenomena in the laboratory with Ph.D. students.

The last stop of the day was a tour through the “Topological Matter Laboratory Cologne”. During the tour, the students watched bewildered the process of entering a Clean Room and walked through the Materials and the Measurements Lab asking all kinds of questions about the instruments and experiments conducted with it. All in all, a captivating day to discover more about the world of physics.
