On June 12th, leading researchers from all 14 Clusters of Excellence in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) presented their outstanding work in the Citizens’ Hall of the Düsseldorf State Parliament. Among them was ML4Q, the state’s single cluster dedicated to quantum computing research.

As Germany’s most populous state, NRW takes pride in being home to the largest number of Clusters of Excellence nationwide, positioning itself as a key node for global talent and world-leading innovation.

Ina Brandes, NRW’s Minister of Science, emphasized the region’s scientific strength in the event’s press release:

“The diversity and excellence of the research landscape in North Rhine-Westphalia is unique. Fourteen of the 57 Clusters of Excellence across Germany are based here. The brightest minds are tackling some of the most pressing challenges of our time, from combating widespread diseases to developing intelligent mobility solutions and promoting sustainable energy use.”

State Parliament Vice President Berivan Aymaz added:

“This event shows that cutting-edge research truly has a home in North Rhine-Westphalia. The transition away from fossil fuels, unprecedented digital connectivity, and the shift toward climate neutrality are only possible thanks to the dedication of our researchers. NRW represents a unique scientific ecosystem in Europe – the future is being shaped here.”

The ML4Q Cluster of Excellence, being a central hub for quantum computing research, is regarded highly within the Ministry of Culture and Science where the cluster’s researchers are described as “among the very best internationally […] developing innovative concepts for this promising technology.”

Looking ahead to the next round of excellence funding starting in 2026, NRW’s universities and government are working hard to secure continued support for existing clusters, including ML4Q, and to foster the development of new ones. Minister Brandes stressed that the government is doing everything it can to support universities in their applications for Clusters of Excellence, focusing all efforts on strengthening North Rhine-Westphalia as a leading science location.
